Don’t “Wait Your Turn” to Lead with Julián Castro

October 23, 2024

The finale of “Break Fake Rules” calls us to challenge norms and lead with conscience

On “Break Fake Rules”, we typically dissect the fake rules of philanthropy. But where are there more fake rules than politics? With just two weeks to go before the general election, we called on a leading political rulebreaker to address what’s at stake in this election and to share his story of navigating government, politics, and philanthropy.

For the finale of “Break Fake Rules”, we are honored to share a conversation with Julián Castro, the new CEO of the Latino Community Foundation! As the former Mayor of San Antonio (then the youngest mayor in modern history), Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in the Obama administration, and later as a presidential candidate, Julián is no stranger to breaking fake rules that get in the way of transforming systems for good. Tune into the new episode to hear Julián recount the rules he broke throughout his inspiring career in public service and what he is observing in his new role at the Latino Community Foundation (LCF). As Julian reflects,

“When I was a city councilman and when I was mayor, I can count on one hand the number of times that anybody from philanthropy approached me just to ask, hey, what are y’all working on?” – Julián Castro

Episode 11: Don’t “Wait Your Turn” to Lead with Julián Castro

In Julián’s conversation with Glen, he retraced his footsteps that led him to philanthropy, and his guiding motivation to serve his community. With his fresh perspective on philanthropy, Julián examines who gets funded, and more importantly, who doesn’t. For example, despite being one of the fastest-growing populations in the U.S. today, Latino communities receive less than 1% of U.S. philanthropic dollars. Hear how Julián and LCF are investing deeply in Latino communities and mobilizing Latino-led giving to unleash the civic and economic power of Latinos.

We sat down for our conversation with Julián in front of a live studio audience at the National Forum on Family Philanthropy, a convening designed to help the family philanthropy community advance their practice and increase their impact. We’d like to give a special thank you to Nick Tedesco, Jen Crino, Molly Lyons, and the rest of the team at the National Center for Family Philanthropy for hosting us and to every rule breaker who attended to lean into this timely conversation.

“We have to find a way in the sector to break down the dynamic of power that has created this gulf between us and who gets funded.”

Julián Castro
